Tips on Buying a good Manual Camera
and
Lenses

  • Choose a camera that enables you to manually set both shutter speed and f-stop, as well as the film speed (ISO). I personally recommend the Nikon FM-2 or the Nikon F3, but there are many fine cameras out there for those manually-inclined. Many will have an automatic setting as well, but if so, make sure that the camera is "aperature-priority" rather than "shutter-priority". This means you have the option of setting the f-stop in automatic mode, which is more important than automatically setting the shutter speed for garden photography.
  • Make sure it has a depth-of-field preview button. This is essential for learning how to take professional shots. This will let you see before you shoot how clear the image is from front of the shot to the back.
  • Buy a camera that allows interchangeable lenses. This may be obvious, but I just thought I'd mention it.
  • Some options that aren't necessary, but sure are handy:
    An exposure compensation dial
A button that allows you to take double-exposures
    An exposure lock
