Clarifying What to Ask For

US residents take note: the system is a little different in England when it comes to types of rooms.

If you want a room with:

One double-sized bed, ask for a DOUBLE room
Two twin beds, ask for a TWIN room or TWIN-BEDDED room
One double bed with a twin or cot for a child, ask for a FAMILY room
One single bed, ask for a SINGLE room
Two double beds - this is rare. Ask and you may find it, but probably not.

Some places will have queen-sized beds or even (gasp) king-sized, but these are also rare. (And king-sized beds are often two twin beds pushed together, tied if you're lucky, but usually just shoved together so you can fall through the crack when you're least expecting to.)

Also, just about every hotel and B&B comes with breakfast. A few (like the Talbot) will also include dinner in the price. If the place doesn't offer food at all, it is called "Self-Catering" or "American Plan". A "Full English Breakfast" in the UK will include coffee or tea, eggs, sausages or thick bacon, mushrooms, cooked tomato, toast with marmalade and jams (don't ask for "jelly" because in the UK that's what Americans call Jell-o).
