You’d think you were in Japan when looking at this display, if it weren’t for the clamour of visitors around you pushing and shoving to get a view. A wall with slanted tiles has been built down the middle of this display, and on each side are immaculate miniature trees displayed on wooden pedestals. My favourite was a tray of Cryptomeria japonica – a mass of miniature trunks growing skywards, which looked like a pocket-sized forest.

You might think that a stand displaying just five individual plants was not exactly overwhelmed with ambition. But these five extraordinary bonsai trees, all maples shown on raised plinths above a moss floor, are captivating. ‘Deshoja’, with leaves in rich pink, is especially striking.
