Gateshead comes to Chelsea
by Graham Rice
Daily News: Tuesday, May 23:

A dramatic representation of the Millennium Bridge is the focal point of the huge marquee exhibit from Gateshead Metropolitan Borough Council. This foot and cycle bridge, more striking and elegant than the Thames' new footbridge, is due to be completed later this year. It appears at Chelsea in a reduced form but still retains its cool futuristic elegance.

Thousands of bedding plants have been used to depict the other features of this resurgent city including the Music Centre and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.

Since Gateshead first exhibited at Chelsea in 1988 their exhibits have become larger and more assured. Last year they were awarded a Gold Medal for a dramatic display based on a RNLI lifeboat; this year they just missed out on Gold but were awarded a Silver Gilt Medal.
