Tuned into roses
by Martyn Cox
Growing roses is a famous flutist’s favourite hobby.

The sound from James Galway’s flute filled the air at the Wolverhampton-based David Austin Roses display in the Floral Marquee East, as the ‘James Galway’ rose (pictured at bottom) was seen for the first time.

James said he was a keen gardener and his patch in Meggen, Switzerland, was full of his favourite plants, especially roses. "I was a towny from Belfast and there wasn’t a rose bush for miles where I grew up.

"I have other plants as well. Lots of trees and shrubs, like hydrangeas and rhododendrons. He said he’d recently taken out some large trees, and everything growing underneath it was "blooming like mad".

"I love gardening, it’s great to help something to grow. I really get a kick out of the successes," he said.
